In this post we look at how, using out-the-box features in SharePoint you can create multi-coloured themes for sites.

Intro

SharePoint sites have site branding features that allow you to easily change the look and feel of your site to match the brand of your company. Although site branding has been around for a while, in April 2025 a new feature appeared in the Microsoft roadmap announcing the ability to apply multi-coloured themes to sites and began rolling out globally as of May 2025. Here’s how to create and edit a mutli-coloured theme in SharePoint:

How to create a multi-coloured theme

  • Navigate to the site you want to create a multi-coloured theme for > press the cog > site branding (new)
  • Press + New theme > + Add color
  • Add the hex or RGB value for the primary colour of your theme
  • Add secondary colours to your theme by pressing +Add color
  • As you add secondary colours to your theme, you will see them appearing below the primary theme colour

💡 Note: There is a limit of up to 16 colour combinations within any given site theme.

  • You are also able to add combinations within the primary/ secondary colours. Here, you can switch around the the background/ accent colours within the colour
  • Once you have finished, press next
  • Give your name a theme > press save. Your theme is now available to use within your site
  • Go back to the site homepage > press the cog > change the look
  • Press Theme > your theme will be shown under the from this site heading > press save

Your theme will now be applied to your site. From here you are able to use the multi-coloured theme in different ways within the site, such as different combinations within the header/ footer, in sections and with quick link web parts.

Editing a theme

In the previous version of site branding, it wasn’t an option to edit a theme after you create one. Well, now you can and here is how you do it:

  • Navigate to the site you want to edit the theme for > press the cog > site branding (new)
  • Select your theme > press edit
  • When editing your theme, you can add/ remove and edit primary and secondary colours within theme.
  • Once finished, press next
  • Either rename your theme to create a new version, or press save to overwrite the existing theme
  • Press save

💡 Note: You have to update the theme within the site to apply it. By default, the previous theme is still applied even if you chose to overwrite the name of it with your edited theme. To do this, just go into change the look > theme > select your new theme and press save.
