Microsoft Search: New Search and Intelligence homepage
The new homepage provides you with a single-entry point to access a range of Microsoft Search features and functions, such as Graph connectors, user feedback, Microsoft Search educational content, and more. The new homepage will be available to all Search Admins, Global Admins, Search Editors, and Global Editors when they log in to the Search & Intelligence section of the Microsoft 365 admin center.

The new Video tab within Search results will improve video search in your organization by having a dedicated place to search through OneDrive and SharePoint videos. This Video tab will appear on Microsoft Search in Bing/Office and SharePoint.

Microsoft Viva is introducing a new suite-level webpage called Viva Home, which will help users find Viva content and navigate to Viva apps. This is not a new Viva app but instead a pre-pinned webpage on Office.com that can educate end users about Viva capabilities and help them quickly jump to different areas within Viva.

Along with Viva Home, we’ve improved the way that users can find what they need. Now, most Viva apps are available on the web in addition to Teams and all available Viva apps on the web are:

Skills in Viva
Microsoft have announced a new AI-powered Skills in Viva service that will help organizations understand workforce skills and gaps, and deliver personalized skills-based experiences throughout Microsoft 365 and Viva applications for employees, business leaders, and HR.

Viva Insights – October update
Here’s a roundup of all the latest news and updates for Viva Insights throughout October:
- New person query and network metrics – New metrics include three new person query metrics and two new network metrics that are used for key customer scenarios.
- Domain suppression and reclassify external domains – Domain suppression and domain reclassification are two other new features in the advanced insights app now generally available to admins. These are critical privacy features which improve metric accuracy while providing privacy.
- Analyst onboarding email – In addition, we’ve launched the onboarding email for analysts using the advanced insights app. This feature is now generally available and will help enable analysts to get quickly onboarded and run queries.

Viva Connections
Updated landing experience for Viva Connections
A new version of Viva Connections is on the way, featuring a customizable look, a dedicated hero section for organizational news, revamped Dashboard and Resources sections, and a new area for announcements and managed links with icons. The phased release will relocate wayfinding to other Viva apps at the bottom of the dashboard to provide quick access to licensed apps.

With Announcements in Microsoft Viva Connections, corporate communicators can now target important communications like urgent announcements, role-specific updates, and safety policy changes to frontline workers. These important messages are delivered through push notifications and announcements that surface in the home experience within Teams.

Viva Connections user experience updates
Microsoft have announced several updates to the Viva Connections user experience this month, including:
- Dark mode – Change the colors on your screen, which can prevent eye strain and save battery life. Only available on mobile.
- Desktop Search – Find what you’re looking for with dedicated search within the desktop version of Viva Connections.
- Analytics – Understand how and when users engage with components of the Viva Connections experience. Learn more about how to access usage data here.
- Homesite integration on mobile – Brings mobile up to parity with desktop by adding dedicated placement in the UI for Global Navigation.
New Cards in Viva Connections
Microsoft have announced several new cards and capabilities to make it easy to find the information you need, accomplish tasks, and take action from the employee app:
- News card – Ensure announcements and company news get the visibility they need through the News card, which can be anchored to the top of the feed and targeted to different employee sets.
- Search Template card – This allows you to build a card that can search against a non-Microsoft repository and create many new custom layouts for cards, such as searching for open conference rooms, trainings, line of business data, or airline tickets.
- Card support for Microsoft Sway, Microsoft Forms, and PowerApps – Engage with Forms and content from Sway and PowerApps directly from the dashboard. These interactive cards enable employees to respond and submit responses without leaving the Connections app.
- Field Services card – Bring a variety of service requests from your CRM data into dashboard cards. This builds off of our previous announcement here and supports a multitude of frontline worker solutions like changing bookings, opening and closing tickets, and managing orders.
- People Search card – This scenario-focused card allows you to quickly search for people in your M365 tenant and message, call, or mail them. This card also builds on the generic search template that can be hooked up to any data source.
- Bot Powered ACEs – Create and manage ACE cards (adaptive cards) that are connected directly to bots.
- Card Designer updates – Now you can directly access in-line data from SharePoint or the Microsoft Graph to build valuable cards and quick views.

Add your organizational data
Organizational Data in Microsoft 365 is a new capability that will be available for use with your Microsoft 365 subscription. This new capability allows you to upload organizational data from HR information systems to unlock premium capabilities and features across M365 and Viva in apps such as Viva Amplify and Insights, as well as in augmenting the Profile Card.

Viva Engage
Articles (new post type)
Microsoft are introducing a new way to post long-form content and newsletters into Viva Engage called Articles. With Articles, you can design the post by adding images, GIFs, videos, and quotes where you want them and shape content using rich formatting.

Network Analytics
See engagement across the entire network with improved analytics that includes activity, sentiment, and broad trends and themes about the conversations happening across communities and conversations in your network. Network analytics also includes a view of post contributors and top communities to help you track popular content and communities.

Draft and schedule posts
Viva Engage now allows users to create a post, save it as a draft, and schedule it for publishing at a later time. This feature offers greater flexibility for authors to control when and how they share content. Drafts enable additional time for tasks like adding images, editing messages, fact-checking, and precise scheduling for events such as earnings calls, holiday greetings, and communication across different time zones.

Viva Insights update – October 2023
Several updates have been announced for Viva Insights this month, including:
- New person query and network metrics – A new metrics in the Viva Insights advanced insights app for analysts. These features are now generally available and will unlock new scenarios for customers.
- Understanding whether employees have control over their calendar – The metrics enable analysts to analyze meeting habits to understand whether employees have redundant meetings, whether they’re the originator of these meetings, and do the meetings leave them with enough time slots for focused work.
- Measure impact of network breadth on sales productivity – The Network outside company and Network outside organization metrics, meanwhile, can be used to understand the breadth of a person’s network
- Domain suppression and reclassify external domains – Domain suppression and domain reclassification are two other new features in the advanced insights app now generally available to admins.

New Teams app
The new Microsoft Teams app is now generally available for Windows and Mac including for education customers. We’re also beginning to roll out new Teams in public preview for our Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and government cloud customers (GCC, GCC-H, DoD).
The new Teams app was reimaged from the ground up to deliver improved performance and enhanced reliability, security, and IT management. The result is a faster, simpler, smarter, and more flexible app that is up to two times faster while using 50% less memory.

New Meet app
Meet is an app available in the new Microsoft Teams that centralizes all your common meeting preparation and catch-up activities. It helps enhance meeting efficiency by simplifying the prep work and reducing time spent revisiting past meetings.

Live translated transcript
Now you can view live meeting transcripts in your preferred language and choose to show the translated transcript with the original transcript as a reference. You can select from more than 30 languages. The transcript is displayed on the side panel of the meeting, which can help make your meeting more productive and inclusive. This capability is available in Teams Premium.

Collaborative notes in Teams mobile
Collaborative notes allow meeting attendees to co-create and collaborate on the meeting agenda, notes, and action items. Since collaborative notes are a Loop component, they are always in sync regardless of how many places they live in. Assigned tasks in collaborative notes automatically sync with Microsoft To Do and Planner.

Portrait Blur
You now have two options to blur their background during meetings. In addition to the existing Standard Blur, you can also choose Portrait Blur. Portrait Blur creates a depth-of-field effect, with a sharper focus on the subject and more subtle blurring of the background.

Town hall
Organizers can set up and host large scale events across an organization with the familiar Teams experience you use for meetings and webinars. Town hall capabilities include a new template, capacity for up to 10,000 attendees, 15 concurrent events across a tenant, third-party eCDN support, green room, manage what attendees see, moderated Q&A, RTMP-in, live translated captions, and more.

External presenter join link in webinars and town halls
As organizers add external presenters to a webinar or town hall, the external presenters receive an email that contains a unique join link to join the event. This unique link allows the external presenter to automatically bypass the lobby and join a town hall directly as a presenter, streamlining the process for organizers and external presenters.

New channels experience
The new channels experience makes it easier to focus on key topics, engage with the right stakeholders, and find specific information so your team can accomplish more together. The new experience features a new conversation view in channels, a revamped compose box, a streamlined information pane, an enhanced in-channel search experience, and more.

People app
The new People app in Teams syncs your Outlook contacts across all your Microsoft 365 apps and devices. With just a few clicks, you can create, view, and edit contacts. Then you can quickly sort and filter them, making it easier to find the people you need when you need them.

Specify a link for requesting new external organizations to join a shared channel
Microsoft Teams admins are now able to capture and redirect requests for external collaboration in shared channels. When you attempt to add a new external member who is not from an approved organization to a shared channel, you will now have the option to file a request to add the external organization. To enable it, the organization’s admin will have to set up an internal support page or request form in advance.

Workflows app
Workflows is a newly released app that helps automate repetitive tasks and integrate information across Teams, Microsoft 365 and other applications. The app consolidates the existing Power Automate and Workflows apps, giving you one unified way to discover, edit, and manage all your workflows. In addition, there is also a new entry point to configure workflows within channels. This new menu option in the channel list allows you to automatically post instant alerts or periodic digests of information. It is now much simpler to stay on top of events in other systems, whether a task is overdue in Planner, a new submission was made in Forms, or changes happened within a third-party tool.

Simplifying joining a meeting on mobile
We are improving the join meeting experience on mobile by reducing the steps it takes to join the meeting, especially if you are joining a meeting that is not a part of your organization. If you join without signing-in can now set and/or preview video and audio settings before entering the meeting. This also helps if you with multiple accounts when they need to switch accounts for multiple meetings.

SMS notifications in Virtual Appointments meeting template
SMS notifications improve your guests’ appointment experience when scheduling business-to-consumer meetings via the Virtual Appointment meeting template. External guests will receive notifications about their appointment in phone text messages, including appointment details and the meeting link so they can join directly from their device. Notifications are sent for appointment confirmation, updates, and a reminder 15 minutes before the appointment begins. This helps make appointments easier and decrease no-shows. This feature is available if you have a Teams Premium license and currently only operate in the United States.

Teams management
These features are currently available in the Teams admin center, or for IT administrators:
- Controlled-content meeting template – Building on meeting templates, we’ve launched an out-of-the-box template that can be used when meeting with external participants. The controlled-content meeting template has preset defaults for meeting options to provide stricter controls over lobby bypass, who can present, allowing chat in lobby/in-meeting, and who can record. This feature is available when the meeting organizer has a Teams Premium license. IT admins can choose to leverage this out-of-the-box template or create their own custom meeting templates.
- Extended real-time telemetry retention for up to 7 days – To facilitate meeting quality troubleshooting for admins in Teams admin center, real-time telemetry available during the meeting will be retained for an extended period, up to 7 days after a meeting has ended, if you have a Teams Premium license. This will enable admins to identify and fix quality issues after the meeting is over, using granular telemetry.
Education
These features currently available to Microsoft’s Education customers:
- SharePoint Calendar Webpart added in Viva Connections for Education – “Teams Calendar” is now available for embedding as a Webpart in Viva Connections for Education and will provide a more focused view of the your schedule. It also makes collaborative actions like joining a meeting, chat, and RSVP quickly accessible for students. The webpart updates during the meeting lifecycle and relevant actions are highlighted. For example: “Join” is focused upon just before the meeting and actions like “Chat” are provided after the meeting is over. The Calendar loaded in the webpart will change according to the scenario, the personal calendar will be loaded in the individual/personal context, and the group calendar will be loaded for the class context.
Government
These features currently available to Microsoft’s commercial customers in multi-tenant cloud environments are now rolling out to our customers in US Government Community Cloud (GCC), US Government Community Cloud High (GCC-High), and/or United States Department of Defense (DoD):
- Conversational bot in meetings now supported in GCC-H and DoD – Microsoft Teams is now adding conversational bot and meetings extensibility support for meetings and calls in GCC-H and DoD.
Frontline workers/ Vertical solutions
These features currently available to Microsoft’s frontline worker customers and vertical solutions:
- Walkie Talkie favorite channels – You can now pin up-to 5 favorite channels on the walkie talkie home screen, enabling your team to quickly switch between these preselected channels to listen to incoming messages or initiate push-to-talk with their coworkers. This helps frontline workers to easily engage with multiple departments that map to your favorited channels in walkie talkie and easily switch between channels to communicate effectively.
- Choose who to notify when publishing a task list – Now you can select which frontline employees should be notified when a task list is published or unpublished to their team. Each time you publish or unpublish a task list, you’ll be able to choose which members of the receiving teams should get a notification in their Teams activity feed. You can choose to notify all team members and owners of the receiving team, notify only team owners, or no one. This update allows you to improve communication and keep frontline workers informed while minimizing unnecessary notifications.
- Approvals Graph APIs – The Approvals Graph APIs allows developers to create and manage Approvals from any application. This set of APIs allows you to integrate Approvals with line-of-business applications and automate creation and updates of approvals.
Power Apps
In Power Apps: Copilot GA, New features/ updates for CMKs, Default environment routing, Low code plugins, ParseJSON/ Untyped Objects GA, Live updates, Offline, Copilot deployment notes modern model-driven apps GA
Copilot in Power Apps is now generally available
Copilot for Power Apps is now Generally Available for app makers. Copilot in Power Apps is an AI companion that guides you through the app creation process, from the backing data to the app design. Makers who started building apps with Copilot are 64% more likely to be successful, and 65% more satisfied with their overall experience.
Copilot is available for all makers regardless of license. You can access Copilot from the Power Apps home page, or from the app creation page.

Low Code plugins (public preview)
Low Code plugins allow makers to customize their experience in a modular way using the familiar Power Fx expression language that tailors the experience to meet their specific needs. The preview release includes the following updates:
- Starting October 2023 Low code plug-ins and the Dataverse Accelerator first-party app will be available in all new environments.
- Starting November 2023, low code plug-ins support the robust Power Platform connectors infrastructure, making it easier to integrate with services outside of Dataverse.
- Support for Bound actions, will allow you to define complex custom code in the context of a record input. This helps optimize development architecture and reduce maintenance costs.

ParseJSON and Untyped objects Generally Available
The JSON text format has become ubiquitous. It is used for storing and transferring all sorts of structured data. The ParseJSON function and untyped objects in Power Fx allow makers to work with this format dynamically in their Power Apps, parsing JSON text into Power Fx objects.

Live Updates in Power Apps Studio (Preview)
The Power Apps team have announced the preview launch of Live Updates in the Power Apps Studio, a game-changing feature for collaboration in canvas apps. Multiple makers can join an app at the same time, with one maker as an editor, and others as readers in read-only viewing app edits in real-time!
To enable this exciting experience, it must be turned on for each individual app. Open your app for editing in Power Apps Studio.

The Learn Hub in Power Apps is a convenient resource for users new to Power Apps, and our latest updates focus on tailored content for pro-developers onboarding and learning to build complex scenarios with low code. With the new Advanced level filter in the Learn Hub, pro-developers can easily access relevant training modules, real-world examples of scaled solutions, developer tools, and more.

Mobile offline for canvas apps on iOS, Android and Windows (Preview)
The Power Apps team have announced the public preview of mobile offline for canvas apps on iOS, Android and Windows devices. Mobile offline has been available in Experimental Preview since May 2023. We’ve been listening to your feedback and we’re excited to make this feature available by default for Power Apps makers.
With this preview, you can make Dataverse data available offline in your app with the flip of a switch. Just build your app with normal Power Fx formulas and the offline feature handles all the complexity for you.

New features and updates for Customer-Managed Key (CMK)’s
Microsoft Power Platform comes with advanced risk and compliance features that give you an easy cost-effective way to cover your risks and compliance needs. As part of these commitments, he Power Apps team have announced the following CMK service updates:
- Encrypt your environment with key from Azure Key vault with private link – You can secure your Azure Key Vault network by establishing a private link connection. This allows you to connect your virtual network using private endpoints to secure your Azure key vault access with our CMK services. (Generally Available)
- Migrate your bring-your-own-key (BYOK) environments to customer-managed key (CMK) with no system downtime – The environment remains enable when you migrate it from BYOK to CMK. (Generally Available)
- Encrypt your environment data with key from Azure Key Vault managed HSM (Hardware Security module) – You can use an encryption key created from the Azure Key Vault Managed HSM to encrypt your environment data. This gives you FIPS 140-2 Level 3 support. (Preview)
- Auto rotate your encryption key using Azure Key Vault key version – You can rotate your encryption key using new key version. The new key version is automatically rotated in the background and there is no action required by the Power Platform admin. (Preview)

Default Environment Routing
Default Environment routing is a new Managed Environments feature that allows Power Platform admins to automatically direct new makers into their own personal developer environment when they visit make.powerapps.com for the first time. By placing makers in an ALM healthy state from day one. And allowing admins to customize the governance rules and policies for each environment according to their organization requirements.

Power Automate
In Power Automate: Dataverse by default, Dataverse connector, work queues GA, Power Automate Desktop update, updated SAP Connector, OAuth support for HTTP request triggers
Dataverse by default – create solution cloud flows by default
In February, the “Solution cloud flows by default” environment setting was made available for public preview. This setting lets administrators make sure that new cloud flows will be created in Dataverse solutions when Dataverse is available in the environment.

Since then, there has been a list of cloud flow creation methods and entry points that Microsoft have been increasingly adding support for. With all integrations scenarios complete, the environment setting will be generally available and turned on automatically so that environments with Dataverse will create solution cloud flows automatically, beginning in November 2023.

New Dataverse connector
Microsoft have announced an update to the Microsoft Dataverse connector in Power Automate. With the new ‘Environment’ parameter, you can use the Dataverse connector to seamlessly connect apps, data, and processes in different Power Platform environments. This feature is currently in public preview.

Work queues
Power Automate work queues are now widely available as a way to efficiently manage and prioritize process-related data. This centralized hub helps with ingesting, processing, tracking, and completing tasks, making workflow automation more effective.

Work queues help manage big processes by breaking them into smaller parts and handling each part separately. This makes everything work better and lowers the chance of missing deadlines.

Power Automate for desktop – October 2023
Microsoft have announced that the October 2023 update of Power Automate for desktop (version 2.37) has been released. Key features include:
- Four new cloud connector actions for Excel Online for Business, Word Online for Business, OneNote for Business (in preview) and Microsoft Teams
- Some UI automation actions can now work in the background
- The values of more variable types can now be edited during debugging

SAP Connector .Net support in on-premises data gateway
Microsoft have announced that as part of the October 2023 release of the on-premises data gateway, we are adding support for NCo 3.1. This means that you can now use the latest version of the SAP Connector for Microsoft .NET to connect to your SAP systems from Power Automate, Power Apps, Power BI, and Azure Logic Apps.
NCo 3.1 is the SAP Connector for Microsoft .NET 3.1, which is a library that enables applications to communicate with SAP systems using the RFC (Remote Function Call) protocol. NCo 3.1 supports both synchronous and asynchronous calls, as well as advanced features such as connection pooling, load balancing, and secure network communication.

Deeper control over HTTP invocation of flows
Microsoft have announced announce a new capability for the “When a HTTP request is received” trigger. Customers can now add OAuth authentication to such HTTP request triggered workflows, to add an additional layer of control to this workflow. With a single parameter within the trigger, makers can restrict only users within their tenant can trigger this workflow by sending an HTTP request to the URL.

Power BI
In Power BI: New admin API, On-prem data gateway, custom deployment pipeline, Power BI desktop feature summary, Power BI OneDrive & SharePoint on by default
New admin API to get insights into tenant setting overrides
With the advent of Fabric, Microsoft have announced a solution that addresses a concern over a single tenant setting to automatically delegate to capacities faced by tenant administrators. The new “GetCapacityTenantSettingOverrides” API helps Fabric tenant admins to gain insight into capacity level overrides. This API can be used to query any tenant setting that may become delegable to the capacity level in the future.

On-premises data gateway October 2023
Microsoft have announced the release of the October 2023 on-premises data gateway (version 3000.190.17). This version includes a PowerShell cmdlet to add gateway to cluster, a SAP NCo library upgrade needed for compatibility and artifact Ids are available in logs without additional logging.

Power BI October 2023 Feature Summary
This month’s update includes OneDrive and SharePoint integration, updates to On-object Interaction, and deduplication rules for composite models.

Power BI OneDrive and SharePoint on by default
Microsoft have started to turn the public preview on by default for tenants that didn’t opt-out of the designated admin setting (see previous blog). As a Power BI admin, you can still disable the feature, “Users can view Power BI files saved in OneDrive and SharePoint (Preview)“, at any time in the admin portal.

This section covers the highlights from the month’s admin digest blog:
- Upgrade to the new Microsoft Teams – now generally available
- New Role-based Access Control (RBACs) in Microsoft Purview – In November, more Role-based access control types will be available in Microsoft Purview to prepare for upcoming features and capabilities relevant to those role groups.
- Enhancements to Migration Manager – Microsoft recently made a number of improvements including migrating File Level Permissions for Dropbox, Box and Google Drive, support for Box Notes conversion, multi-project support on a single source, and optimization to the summary report bulk download process. - Enhancements to device management in Microsoft 365 Apps admin center (channel updating) – Admins can soon activate Current Channel updates in Cloud Updates, configure various settings for Current and Monthly Enterprise Channel to exclude groups, create exclusion windows, configure rollout waves, update deadline, and manage rollbacks.
