Microsoft Ignite 2019 – roundup (updated)

With so much news coming out of this years’ Ignite for my own sanity as much as anything else I thought it would be useful to catalog as many of the announcements coming out of each day as I can, and provide useful links to the relevant Microsoft articles for further reading.

Let’s take a look!

Azure Synapse Analytics

A new service that merges the capabilities of Azure SQL Data Warehouse with new enhancements that helps make data work quickly and securely by pulling together insights from all data sources, data warehouses and big data analytics systems.

Azure Arc

Azure Arc is a set of technologies that unlocks new hybrid scenarios by bringing Azure services and management to any infrastructure. Azure Arc is available in preview.

Azure Quantum

Azure Quantum is a full-stack, open cloud ecosystem, developed in collaboration with partners such as 1QBit, Honeywell, IonQ, and QCI is designed to bring the benefits of quantum computing to people and organisations around the world.

Project Cortex

Badged as the first new M365 service since the launch of Microsoft Teams, Project Cortex uses AI to reason over content across teams and systems, recognizing content types, extracting important information, and automatically organizing content into shared topics. Cortex then creates a knowledge network based on relationships among topics, content, and people.

Cortana’s AI comes to Outlook

Play my emails in Outlook for iOS Cortana uses natural voice and language recognition to intelligently read new emails aloud and share scheduling changes.

Power Platform

Microsoft Flow is now Microsoft Power Automate, to better align with the Microsoft Power Platform.

Robotic process automation (RPA) has been added to Microsoft Power Automate (UI Flows), delivering an end-to-end automation solution that spans AI, APIs, and UI.

Microsoft Power Virtual Agents—a no-code/low-code app that allows anyone to create and deploy intelligent AI-powered virtual agents.

A host of new security enhancements for Microsoft Power BI, that add industry leading data security capabilities no matter where your analytics data is used and accessed.

A new set of pre-built models for AI Builder that add even more advanced AI models to Microsoft Power Automate and Microsoft Power Apps that are available to everyone.

New Microsoft Edge & Microsoft Bing

Newly enhanced solution brings together the internet with your intranet via Microsoft Search in Bing, as well as powerful default privacy protection and the ability to move from web research directly into Microsoft Office applications.


Teams chat in Outlook – it’s now really easy to move back-and-forth email conversations out of email into a Teams chat.

Customize your Teams conversations and experience – Private channels, multi-window capability, Linux teams client, Polls & Surveys message extensions and pinned channels.

Easily manage conversations, tasks, and files from other Microsoft 365 apps within Teams – Outlook & Teams integration, Tasks in Teams and a new Yammer app for Teams.

Conduct more inclusive and effective meetings – Microsoft Whiteboard enters GA, live captions in Team Meetings, presenter and attendee controls plus much more.

Give your Firstline Workers easier access to Teams with SMS sign in, off Shift access, global sign-out, delegated user management and Graph API enhancements.

Enable industry-specific scenarios in healthcare and other industries with Virtual consults & patient coordination

New planning and administration tools to easily manage Teams and protect your data – advisor for Teams, ProPlus semi-annual channel, certified app catalog, Policy packages, Policy assignment to security groups in PowerShell, Microsoft Teams Rooms in the Teams Admin Portal, Managed Meeting Rooms and Safe Links.

Automate workflows, integrate custom apps and data insights within Teams using Power Platform – Power Apps creators can now publish their apps as Teams apps, Pinning an app created with Power Apps to Teams, Teams-centric actions & triggers with Power Automate and Power BI interactive cards in Teams.



More updates

Expanded view, PowerApps library integration, List and library card view design formatting, conditional formatting rule builder UI , alternate row view formatting, list and Libraries web parts consume dynamic data

Teamify your SharePoint sites, migration manager, Sensitivity labels & auto classification for Teams, Office 365 Groups, and SharePoint Sites, Information barriers, Automatic expiration of external users’ access, SharePoint Server 2016 and 2019 templates

New hub capabilities, additional branding ability, audience targeting for navigation, page, news, and web parts updates, news and page scheduling, multilingual sites
