Account/ org switching – what’s the big deal?
I’ve been using Teams for going on 8 years now and one area the Teams app (desktop or mobile) had been consistently rubbish was account or organisation switching. What I mean by this is where you are added to a Team within an M365/ Teams environment that isn’t your own. Historically, it was really clunky having to switch between org’s. You had a log out/ in style experience, wouldn’t see messages from either your home org when switched, or from the guest org when in home etc – like I say really clunky.
A new experience appears
At the back end of 2025, Microsoft released an updated account/ org switching experience (still in preview) that I have been using ever since – and it’s great! Now there is a little notification icon eat the bottom of your Teams app that shows activity and message counts that you can click on and see all the accounts/ orgs you are a part of and more. Here’s a look at it in action:
How to use the new activity experience
These steps assume you are already a guest of another org:
- Click on the activity icon in the bottom corner of the Teams app
- Here you will see all the org’s you are a guest of, with options for:
Things to look out for
- You can only pin up to 3 tenants for quick access
- Only 10 notifications are shown per tenant in the panel
- Viewing activity notifications in the panel doesn’t mark items as read; they clear when clicked in the panel or viewed in that tenant’s main Activity app.
