In this post, we take a look at how you can quickly and easily display the quick links web part in different colours within a single SharePoint site.

The problem
If you’ve been working with SharePoint for any particular length of time you will know that some things are easy, and others are not when it comes to configuring or manipulating SharePoint. One such example may seem trivial, but trying to display the quick links web part in different colour configurations has not been possible using out-the-box functionality for several years…well that was until this month!
The solution
Meet site branding! A new(ish) feature that’s had an overhaul recently that allows you to do much more with site theming than was once possible, specifically multi-coloured themes. I wrote more about this in an earlier post you can find here. For this post however, I am going to focus on how you can use site branding to allow you to display the quick links web part in different colours:
- Navigate to the site you wish to update > press the cog > site branding
- Press + New theme > + Add color. Add the hex or RGB value for the primary colour of your theme
- Add secondary colours to your theme by pressing +Add color. As you add secondary colours to your theme, you will see them appearing below the primary theme colour
You are also able to add combinations within the primary/ secondary colours. Here, you can switch around the the background/ accent colours within the colour. This is the part you will need to play around with in order to get the combinations right for your quick link web parts.
- Complete the process of creating a new theme and save it for use in your site
- Navigate back to your site, apply the theme and save it
- Add new sections to your page > click on the section properties toggle to configure it
- Select Design > Choose a theme colour based on your preference

- Add a quick link web part to the section > it will inherit the colour scheme based on the theme colour selected

Note: This may not be new, but it’s new to me. You are now able to toggle the title of quick link web parts on/ off within the properties (before you had to put a space in the title to not show it). Also, I think animations are quite good, and would like to see them across more web parts.
Bonus
If you’ve ran out of combinations in your theme/ feeling lazy there is a way you can add backgrounds to your sections and use them with multi-coloured web parts. For example, if I needed to have a light grey background for my section, but I didn’t have it in my theme:
- Add a new section >click on the section properties toggle
- Select Design > under background select add a background
